How to Install PHP Iconv on Amazon Linux 2

Using the PHP function iconv() allows you to convert a string to the requested character encoding. Usually, you need to install Iconv on Amazon Linux 2 if your PHP setup is using FPM with Nginx.


  • Amazon Linux 2
  • sudo privileges
  • PHP installed

Install PHP Iconv on Amazon Linux 2

Step 1. Enable the desired PHP version.

sudo amazon-linux-extras enable php{version}

For example:

sudo amazon-linux-extras enable php7.4

Step 2. Install php-iconv.

sudo yum clean metadata
sudo yum install php php-iconv

Step 3. Restart your web server service.

sudo systemctl restart nginx
sudo systemctl restart php-fpm

Step 4. Create the phpinfo file.

echo "<?php phpinfo(); ?>" > /var/www/html/info.php

Step 5. Verify the installation.
